LOOKING AFTER YOUR BIKE
Things to look out for when you are trying to look after your bike and keep it well maintained.
Here are a few things to check on your bike regularly:
1. Brake engages when brake lever is pulled. Check that the brake block is not worn past the wear line or that is has hardened or perished.
2. Check the Wheels for buckles, rim damage and snapped spokes. Also check to make sure there is no movement in the wheels.
3. Check for movement in the headset/forks.
4. Check that the handlebars are central and tight.
5. Check that the frame does not have any fractures or cracks on the joints.
6. Check that the chain is well-oiled and clean, also see if there is dirt on the gear cogs and chain ring.
7. Check the gear mechs to ensure they are well oiled and clean. Adjust them as necessary.
8. Check the tyres for wear and see if they have perished (fine cracks), check the inner tubes for pressure.
9. Check wheel nuts and crank nuts for correct torque.
10. Check tightness of other bolts and screws especially addittional accessory nuts and bolts like mudguard stays, pannier racks etc.
11. Check pedals for movement and make sure they are tight.
