Things to look out for when buying a bike
1. Spend your money wisely.
Don't buy a cheap mountain bike when you want to ride it regularly off road on the weekends. This is a common mistake, you make think that the special offer half price bike is the right one for you, especially with a salesman telling you its perfect. However, these cheaper mountain bikes (under £100) often have big flaws and are only really useful for a short journey on easy terrain 3 times a year! These bikes usually have cheap suspension forks, heavy steel frames, plastic coated steel cranks (heavy), plastic coated brake units or pressed steel brake units (these flex and are prone to squeeking), plastic brake levers which can flex and can be detrimental to braking, some say they are dangerous and unsafe because occassionally you can pull plastic brake levers on full and the wheels still turn as they flex.
Other problems with cheaper bikes include compatibility issues with gear mechs and levers causing poor gear changing and difficulty in replacing parts. The rear cogs can also be made so cheaply that the freewheel does not engage properly or the freewheel mechanism may break under minimal stress.
